THE WOO HOO WORKSHOPS

I’ve been teaching improv and comedy for over a decade. I love the work! I enjoy talking shop and breaking down comedy, and I also find it very rewarding helping other people find and hone their comedic voices. I taught at the UCB Theater for many years, and I’ve been teaching my own independent workshops in Los Angeles, online and around the world since 2018.

I offer my own workshops every month. Check out this link to see what I’m currently teaching and to sign up for a class!

You can also hire me to coach your team, or teach a workshop by emailing WooHooImprov@gmail.com

Here are some workshops I teach or have taught in the past:

COMEDY CREATION WORKSHOP

This is an ongoing, monthly workshop that can be taken in person or online. Students create comedy via improvisation and writing exercises in class, we hone that work through writing and rehearsals, and then it gets performed at The Woo Hoo live show.

This includes 4 class sessions & 1 class show per session. There are discounts if you sign up for multiple sessions.

IMPROV SCENE WORK & TEAM WORK

This class is open to people of all experience levels. The aim of this workshop is to practice a few simple concepts that can make your scenes easier to understand and more fun to play. We will focus on fleshing out your reality, framing your scenes, establishing POV and being a fun, supportive teammate.

FOCUS -> FUN

This is usually a one day workshop meant to help improvisers find their focus quickly in their scenes, and how to have the most fun with their premises and ideas once they are on the same page. This is the workshop I teach most often as a one off.

THE IMPROV TOOLBELT

This class will give you some essential "tools" for your "improv toolbelt". A lot of people are looking for THE ONE method, or the one sure fire way to pull off a good scene every time. The truth is, most good improvisers get good through experience. They've been in a lot of scenes, they know what has worked for them and what hasn't, and they know when to use the right improv tool for any given situation.

This workshop is meant to give you some of the tools I've found most useful, using mostly exercises I've come up with myself or stolen (w/ credit) from teachers I've had in the past.

FORM-A-PALOOZA

You will learn at least 1 new form in each of these classes. We will use the last class to pick a form to perform at the show and rehearse it. We will start with The Monoscene, The Slacker, The Soundtrack, The Pretty Flower, and others like The Documentary or Evente if time permits. This one is meant for improvisers who have plenty of experience with the Harold.

THE DOCUMENTARY

This 4 week class focuses on my favorite form, The Documentary. I first practiced this form in a class with Billy Merritt at UCB, then a few years later I formed a group called Werner Hotdog that further honed the form and did about a year long run at UCB. Billy and I teach this form differently.

In these 4 weeks, you’ll learn to create a documentary style improv show live on stage. I like this form because it is structured, but open to fun tangents. It’s very focused on characters and exploring worlds, and the overall tone of the documentary is real and grounded even if the subject matter is wild.

THE HAROLD WORKSHOP

Just what it sounds like. This is usually a 3 session course split up into focus on first beats, second beats & group games. I spent 6 years on Harold night at UCB and many more years teaching The Harold at UCB. I give students the bare bones techniques I find are most helpful in the Harold.
